The Name is Rajnikanth

Posted by Navin

Just like any other kid who has grown up in Chennai I am a part of the innumerous "fans" of Thalaivar. Though I may not belong to those group of people who do the "palabhishekam" and "Rupeemala's" for him , the number of times I have watched every movie of his cannot be counted on my fingers. My mother is still amazed at how I do not tire from watching their repeats on the Saturday 1'0 clock slots. I still remember the adrenaling pumping for each of those dialogues I heard during the second day screening of Sivaji. There were fathers of teenagers sitting around me outshouting their sons , that is the excitement created when Thailavar delivers his punchline.

Despite all his fan following and demi-god status in South India , he is just a laughing stock in the north. The people are amazed at how Rajnikanth does not obey the laws of physics and fail to accept the fact that none of his stunts are graphic-animated, all of it is true - he does not use a stunt double- that is what all of us believe and that is what makes the movie a success down south. We are all believers :).To just give you a sample of what non-believers make out of a Superstar movie , please read this , a blog post by Anuradha Sengupta, a CNN-IBN journalist. The post recieved a response of a meagre 1798 comments to date many of which included death threats and denouncing her skills, all for writing a few lines about her views on the Superstar's latest movie-Sivaji. The beauty of the movie is lost when she understands the dialogue as : Pigs come in herds, lion comes single ; while sitting in a Mumbai theatre. For the same line, Satyam( the theatre) literally vibrated from the audience response. Down south , it is imbibed in our culture to watch a Rajni movie and cheer for every line, hate the villain, buy first show tickets for whooping prices of upto 1500 to display our love for the Man .

More than everything else, a Rajni movie takes cinemagoers to a level never seen before. For which other actor, would producers ever be ready to invest the staggering amount of Rs 80 crores without thinking twice.Everything moves to a new level when the stakes are on Rajni- the music, the camera work, the art , nothing goes unattended. Such is the perfection levels a Thaliavar movie delivers. No other actor in the Indian cinema industry can command such respect, his worst flop gave him Rs 25 crores if I am not wrong ( a self-driven spiritual based venture Baba ) . For ages altogether he has reigned the movie industry down south and of late has started gaining good ground in the lands above too. The distributors of "The Pirates of the Carribean : At the world's end " advanced their Indian release date fearing the Rajni onslaught awaiting in the form of Sivaji. A fact that is well known is that Sivaji's parking costs in Mumbai and Delhi earned more than the total collection of the Bacchan family starrer Jhoom Barabar Jhoom .

Pages altogether can be written , and has most recently been released - "The Name is Rajnikanth" by Gayathri Shreekanth which I am sure is by far the bestseller in lands where Tamil is spoken. We all await with bated breath ,the auspicious moment to see the Thalaivar on big screen for the next time.

To end with, despite all the hype and hoopla surrounding the new Rajni movies, my all time favourite still is ThilluMullu, whats yours ?

firstly two opinions

1) favourite movie- bhasha
2) Book doesn't do justice to the man and his work.

Then moving on to my grouse with those North Indian or whoever who finds Rajni "funny" "clown"ish is why the double standards?? when you can watch the same thing done by H(b)ollywood stars, you think it is cool, you are ready to 'believe' that it is true, exciting and entertaining. Is it because it is cool and probably following and liking English movies is the in thing.

What are any of MI series movies or Sharukh Khan movies, where a 40 year old plays a 18 year old college going guy, or when he has 14 year old daughter and still finds his college 'friend' unmarried and looking 25 and marry and live happily ever after.i can go on with a bit of research and help about those E(hi)nglish movies which are 'classy' and 'super hits' and how they are as good or as bad as Rajni's stunts.

I guess Rajni phenomenon defies logic, so i guess you either like him or you don't. But i don't find a reason or explanation to insult him. If you find something go on, because surely Rajni has enough people to vouch for his work, he surely doesn't need you.

Yes, completely agree with you on the aspect of insulting the man's work. He has his own set of huge followers, if one cannot appreciate it's beauty, nobody cares there are millions of others who adore it. And also true about the Hollywood and Bollywood part , people are just ready to accept the most commonly acceptable thing in their circle and brush off others as rubbish. As far as the book goes, I have no idea except for the fact that it hit the stands last week :). The story of Manick Baasha, is probably the favourite for most Rajni lovers - the right mix of the rajni glorifying without the story being compromised .

Padayappa, ob! ;) The scene where Rajni brings down the jhoola with his garment, man...that is just class!

Someone told me that Rajni started shooting for Sivaji with a token salary of 1 rupee. All he wants is a cut in the profits of the film, which will probably amount to a few crores. Actors up north get their due in terms of moolah irrespective of the success of the movie... and very few actors command such stage presence as Rajni does. That's another aspect that sets him apart from the rest I guess.

Of course, Padaiyappa was a complete re-invention of the style and charisma of the man. My choice went to Thillumullu for it being one of the movies before he rose to superstardom and of course, my taste for comedy . There is no doubt that no other actor can guarantee success in the film industry like Rajni. I am pretty sure that his voice alone will make "Sultan" a blockbuster.

Thillu Mullu is my fav too!!!( My all time fav comedy movie). Its hard to deliver such a clean comedy movie in any era (specially in our age where comedy means unadulterated perversion(sexual of course) but ya nuthing beats the padayapa scene hari is refering to.I personally feel rajini was underated for his acting skills, remember the movie "pathinaaru vayadhinilae " which is better known for kamal's acting prowess.

Finally one more person agrees with me , Thank You :) . Yes, we all remember Parattai in pathinaru vayathinale one of Rajni's earlier movies and one that established him in the field. His acting skills always get less attention due to the commercial packaging accompanying his movies .Moreover, no words can describe him best, it is the applause that is the benchmark of his skills .

Haha :) You're that big a fan, eh? I like watching his movies.. lots of entertainment. That's it. As far as his comedy goes, it's good, it's fine, although I prefer Kamal's.

April 1, 2008 at 1:14 PM

Of course , I am . Yeah his movies are the best form of entertainment. Kamal belongs to a different class, he struggles , experiments and delivers , the two stand out distinctly in their respective styles .

First of all, no offence, rajni fans, I have nothing against him
1. Kiki,
I hate sharukh, and my heart lies with you on those points.

2. When matrix/MI movie pull-off these OUTTTA the world-impossible actions, they are backed by a KILLER story and SUPERB graphics, which I didn't find in rajni movies.

3. I saw shivaji in gult, and it was okay. The scenes with the 1 rupee coin were too funny, while the chewing gum thing was just dumb. But, that guy can dance well for a 60 yr old, I must say.

Cheers,
and peace.
:) P.S.
Has anyone seen rajni's hindi movie
'HUM'
with amitabh bacchan, govinda , Danny Denzengopa and others? I guess you'd atleast remember the song 'Jumma Chumma' from it? :)
Worth the 3 hours.

No worries Rao, there is going to be no outbreak of violence against you. We have all grown beyond that and as I already stated in my post, non-believers cannot experience the phenomenon called Rajnikanth. All of us do remember his stint in hindi and it was a lesson well learnt for him too I suppose, to stick to where he was respected and loved . I would also like to add to your views on King Khan - despite liking or disliking his works, I believe he is the closest Bollywood will ever get to the Rajni style - remember the rickshaw stunts in Main Hoon Na ? and when did he last deliver a flop ?

April 1, 2008 at 2:13 PM

he's tried his shit with hindi movies too, remember chaalbaaz?

April 1, 2008 at 7:13 PM

I remember seeing a few of his hindi movies (like HUM), it is not exactly the rememberable sort of stuff for most of us who have grown up on Rajni movies .
